Workplace mediation
What does a workplace mediator do?
A labor mediator is a professional facilitator specialised in resolving workplace conflicts. This can range from disputes between employees and employers to tension within teams or between colleagues.
How can a workplace mediator help?
- Conflict analysis: The mediator maps out the core of the conflict and helps the parties understand the underlying causes.
- Facilitating communication: The mediator provides a safe environment in which those involved can share their concerns, frustrations and views.
- Guiding negotiations: Supporting the search for a solution that is acceptable to everyone, from improved cooperation to a respectful parting of ways.
- Guaranteeing impartiality: The mediator takes no side and ensures everyone involved feels heard and understood.
- Drawing up agreements: Once a solution is reached, the mediator, upon request, helps to document the agreements.
When is workplace mediation the right choice?
- Conflicts between employee and employer about performance, terms of employment or dismissal
- Tension or disputes between colleagues
- Problems around reintegration, for example when returning to work after illness or burnout
- Miscommunication or differing expectations within a team
- Inappropriate behaviour, such as bullying or harassment in the workplace
- Restoring working relationships, or guidance towards a respectful parting of ways
Including within international teams, where clear communication makes the difference between a misunderstanding and a conflict. I work in Dutch, English and German.
